Please help with ideas for birthday gift

Recommended Posts

My wonderful next door neighbour will be 80 in about a month's time.

I would like to buy him something special, preferably with a British angle.

In the early days I bought him garden tools, more recently a viyella shirt and best of all, even though he hardly drinks, a bottle of Bushmills with his name on the label.

I am really struggling please does anyone have any bright ideas ? It is a sort of mantra of his that if he has a fire, a bed and place at the table he needs nothing else.

What about a lovely fruit cake in a tin?

I know Fortnum's and Betty's do them, but I just googled "fruit cake in a tin" and found lots.

If he lives on his own, the cake keeps well, and will last him for ages.

And the French seem to like fruit cake.
