Patf
That's interesting, Norman, thanks.Another thing I thought would start soon, using the new regional names. I think you and I might be in the same region now, Occitanie?
andyh4
Auvergne Rhone Alpes has been in use for several months already - certainly since mid June.

Gardengirl
Our place is in Occitanie too. Not that it has begun to seep into local life in our part of the Gard yet - most friends and neighbours seem to feel it's far too remote, hasn't any connection to them. It really is an enormous region; until begins to make any difference they'll just shrug and carry on as before. For now I prefer Occitane , just used Verveine shower gel. Maybe Occitanie will grow on me...........

Maybe Occitanie will grow on me...........[/quote]It really is a most disparate region, with places as different as Sète and Lourdes, or L'Aubrac and the petit Camargue The name also risks being a bit of a political hot potato, since the Catalan element down by Perpignan feel left out, and it suggests importance for the rumbling Occitan movement.I prefer Pyrénées Mediterranée, as I feel it reflects the two major geographical features ...but I lost. Gardengirl
Me too, but those who wanted Occitanie really got themselves organised - they were fighting for something they believed in whereas most people I know who voted tried to choose a name that would bring all the many disparate parts together. As you say, the Catalan question is likely to become a very hot political potato. I had an email a day or two ago which mentioned that there is still a possibility there could be an addition to the region's new name to placate feelings down there.I wonder how long it will take such a name to really mean something to people. idun
I used to be in the Rhone Alpes. Being bunched in with Lyon was bad enough, as the lyonnais in general, are not that popular in the Alpes or at least with the savoyards I know. But the Auvergne feels like it is a huge distance away. Annecy to Aurillac, about 450kms or a lot more depending on the route, feels plain wrong. And it illustrates how BIG France is, if that is OK, and how small this island I live on is too. alittlebitfrench
Don't Lyon and Grenoble people hate each other ?When I lived in Lyon the motorway between Lyon and Grenoble was one big fight between 69 and 38 reg cars. The French are strange people.
NormanH
I don't know about those two groups, or about hatred, but I have first-hand experience of the two very different mentalities of the people who live on the coastal 'Mediterranean' part of our new region, based on wine-growing, bullfighting, sea and sunshine; what might be said to be 'aujourd'hui peut -être'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f317gvBq26Q&html5=1and those who live in the upland and mountain regions where they have snow, rain, animals to look after, or the soil to till. They are as different as wine and cheese...
