mint
After days of ducking the question as to whether he will stand, he's now confirmed his candidature:http://www.lefigaro.fr/elections/presidentielles/primaires-gauche/2016/12/05/35005-20161205LIVWWW00186-manuel-valls-primaire-gauche-presidentielle-candidat-2017.phpCan't say I care for his slogan, can you? woolybanana
Well, it was obvious he had to stand, wasn't it, Nimt. He is the only hope of the Left but will Montebourg and Melenchon allow him to have a free hand? I doubt it. They are both very vain, self serving individuals who spend far too much time admiring themselves in mirrors, front and back. And none of them will have the good sense to get behind Macron. So, we live in hope that Fillon will have the atrength to see off the LePen challenge. The Left is so discredited in France at present that I can't see how they can recover, particularly now that they have taken power over l'epargne. idun
What a load of rabble, is there anyone decent out there????OH does not like Macron, but, to me, so far, he seems the only one who is ok'ish.
mint
Seems to be like the Labour Party in the UK; no leadership, no discipline, no credible policies.MĂ©lenchon, quite mad and totally unelectable.Macron I am not sure about. Can't put my finger on it but I wouldn't trust him.....bit too slick and doesn't come across as sincere.Anyway, being the new boy on the block, he stands no chance. I think the French would prefer same old, same old.
Gluestick
Clearly, Minty, Valls, as Hollande's PM carries with him the taint of Hollande's failed Socialist policies.Personally, I believe Valls is a sacrificial goat. as was Walter "Fritz" Mondale put up to fight the Dem's presidential battle against Reagan.Interestingly, I was working in Silicon Valley Calif at that time, and in our local hostelry, as Reagan and Mondale were on TV in a Head-to-Head debate, the barstaff pulled out a big TV on a lazy tongs over the bar, the lights were dimmed and for the whole hour, everyone in the bar was glued to the TV.It was surreal: drinks were still being served, quietly, the soft whisper of coins and notes exchanging and absolutely zero conversation! After the debate, loads of discussion; and even life-long Dems were backing Reagan and going to vote for him.Seems to me the French are fed to the back teeth with Holland and his Socialist stupidity; thus measuring Valls hope, I would suggest it lies between Stanford-Le-Hope; The Cape of Good Hope; Bob Hope; and No Hope![:D]
mint
Strange that Valls should be "tainted" by being Hollande's PM but Fillon, so far, seems to be left untouched and untainted by having been Sarkozy's PM?I believe the more straightforward explanation is that people generally everywhere seem to be disenchanted by left-wing politics.Socialist has become a dirty word[:(]

NormanH
The problem with Hollande is that he was elected on a left-wing programme, but then back-tracked and turned into a social democrat.
