woolybanana
The mayor of a small commune has been hauled before a departmental court because he passed a ‘law’ banning the use of pesticides by farmers within 150 metres of habitations. He is now to be forced to rescind his law by the department.ARE THEY SODDIN NUTS?https://www.lemonde.fr/planete/article/2019/08/17/un-maire-convoque-devant-le-tribunal-apres-avoir-interdit-l-usage-des-pesticides-pres-des-habitations_5500332_3244.html
idun
The Prefets do not like unilateral declarations of intent to do something 'good' or decent or just plain common sense. It won't do at all. After Chernobyl, the Prefet where I lived declared that there was no radiation problem in France and none had crossed the borders. This was not true. Like there was no Mad Cow disease in France either..... although locally, one may have seen the very odd report about it.Surely you are used to french ways Wooly and the hierarchy that must be blindly obeyed[:-))]
woolybanana
Well, doudone, I do understand but am still amazed by the obtuseness of it all. My take is that the farmers’ lobby must have put huge pressure on the prefet to get home to d9 this as he must be aware of the environmental imlications. alittlebitfrench
Don't mix up rural France with France. It is not the same thing.Just spent a week in rural France. It was loverly...for a week.
woolybanana
It is precisely the attitude of the urban elite ( as they see themselves) towards small town and rural France which caused the gilets jaunes who see themselves as overlooked, patronised and forgotten, and they are right. alittlebitfrench
Ummm....When the GJ movement started last year, 70 + % of France were in support.Your point falls flat on its face WB.I'm not sure anyone would want to live 150 metres from a field that is being sprayed by pesticides. Would you ?When we lived rural we only drank bottled water. Never from the tap.
woolybanana
Or live with urban pollution...We all live with some, ALBF.Water not necessarily more dangerous than townie water. Most GJ issues have not been dealt with yet, such as reducing VAT, giving local people a real voice, massive improvement in local transport infrastructure, low wages... one could go on.It may be that the GJ movement has been taken over by some extremists, which is not surprising. Lehaut
"When we lived rural we only drank bottled water. Never from the tap."Before moving to a big town, we too lived in rural France for 22 years. The whole family drank the tap water, why not. We regularly were sent the chemical tests. Nothing wrong with it at all.
alittlebitfrench
You just have to google.."pollution de l'eau pesticides agricole" and read all about it.Massive problem in France.personally I would not subject my baby to tap water in France. Everyone I know drinks bottled water.
woolybanana
There is no guarantee that bottled water is particularly safe either, ALBF. Just have a little google.

woolybanana
The Government is now proposing that the minimum distance between housing or schools and farmers’ spraying should be either 5 or 10 metres.Which confirms my belief that they wanna kill off the population of rural areas or at least make them so ill that they cant complain or even ensure that they all grow two heads.NUTTERS. No wonder some maires are standing up to it.http://www.lefigaro.fr/flash-eco/pesticides-une-consultation-sur-internet-a-partir-de-lundi-20190907
