Good place to stop en route?

Recommended Posts

Planning to drive down to the South of France. (First time usually fly!!) want to stock up on wine en route - can anyone suggest a good place to break the journey overnight preferably in wine making area and/or  give vineyard recommendations as well?  Figure we will need a drink after all that driving!

Near Auxerre, Chablis about 20 miles, Sancerre about 40 miles.

A6 runs near here, I bet there are chain hotels?

We used to stay at a nice little campsite at Ligny le Chatel, next village over from Chablis, but it's maybe not open this time of year.

If it were me, I would stop in Dijon or Beaune so that I could pop into Nuits St Georges. I don't expect I could afford to buy any of the produce, but I drove through once and have wanted to spend some time there ever since.

I think Macon is a good place to stop, you can get a nice meal at the Maison Maconnaise de Vin and there are lots of places around to buy Bourgogne Aligoté and so on and some very well marked routes which you can get information on from the tourist office.

If you are taking the autoroute du soleil (A7) as far as Orange then there are some great Cotes du Rhone to be had. Orange is small, but a pleasant place to stop, less expensive and easier to find your way around than Avignon, especially in a car. Beaumes de Venise is nearby and if you head in that direction there are lots of opportunities to buy wine.

Any of these stops are good ideas.  Chablis is a nice little town, nowhere near as commercialised as one would expect from the fame of the wine.  Likewise Sancerre.  And close to Sancere you have the village of Menetou Salon, which produces a superb white wine (in our opinion now preferable to Sancerre).

Beaune is also a good idea as is Macon, especially as the Macon Villages wines are some of our favourite whites.  A little further on the you could stay in Chalon sur Saone and visit the Beaujolais cru villages and stock up on some first class Fleurie, St Amour or Morgon.  The choice is endless really, if you're following the A6 you have a good 100-150 mile stretch in which you will find excellent wines almost everywhere.

There's as couple of B&Bs in Meursault I go to one even makes wine (adequate). And François Mikuslki (also in Meursault) makes mind blowing whites. His Aligoté, which I have in my cellar only costs about €4 a bottle - maybe €5.

If you're interested, ask for the B&B addresses.

Meursault is around 20 mins from the Beaune exit off the A whatever, Autoroute du Soleil.
