SNCF St Malo

Recommended Posts

From speaking to this summer's guests and from the recent experiences

of relatives, I have concluded that flying has now returned to being

strictly for the birds. Certainly all ideas that it is a relexing,

effcient and in any way "quick" means of transport have, for me,

been thoroughly dispelled. Driving is out I can no longer face the idea

of the M25, not after the six hour jam I had to get through last time

(is it just me, or do all drivers of French regisitered cars find

themselves the object of abuse from morons in white trannis and rep

mobiles?), so I am considering a rail / ferry combo for my next jaunt

to the UK. Foot passengers, it seems, can get on to BF for about

thruppence ha'penny mid week, propertly planned rail travel can also be

cheap, and the one commodity I have in spades during the winter months

is time.

As far as I can tell, the ferry port at Caen is not easily reached by

rail travellers, but is the station in St Malo anywhere near the port?

Thanks in advance...

From the port, the quickest way has to be, to cross the road and go

through the timber yards. You reach the end (left for the intra muros

and Porte Vincent) and for the new station turn right, up to the old

station and the new one is a little further on around the corner.

Cassis, looking at the map, there is a road (the one I am talking

about) missing, that more or less goes straight from the port to the

station in a fairly straight line (bar where I mention earlier about

turning right).

Always taxis waiting to meet passengers off the ferry and it cannot be

too expensive for just a few minutes by car and yes, not much more than

15 mins by foot but as Kathy said, pulling one of those trunks on

wheels wouldn't be a lot of fun though and take a while longer !

There is a new road that takes cars there quicker coming from the Hippodrome area.
...La  Rochelle ...Paris...Eurostar ...Waterloo.....as an alternative ...its fast and not too expensive ...have you looked at that route ?
I have used Eurostar to reach La Roche-sur-Yon from Waterloo, changing at Lille Europe (just a change of platform) for the Nantes TGV.  That's less painless than changing *stations* in Paris.

However, I think you can get cheaper deals if you do opt for the gallop across Paris. Friends of mine coming from the Vendee often seem to find very good prices/special offers doing it that way.

EDIT
Going back to the original thoughts, I just looked at SNCF website and you could leave St Malo at 09h50 and be in La Rochelle at 15h56, changing at Redon and at Nantes.

Thank you all for your replies. It does look as though the route via St

Malo as a foot passenger is a workable alternative. Thanks also for the

suggestions re. Eurostar - I will look at this too, but (old sea dog

that I am) I do find any trip on a boat a soothing experience.

Miki - how far in advance should I book the rickshaw service?

No, that's not me, that's cousin Sanjid. He works out of our chambres

d'hôtes...le Bombay Branch. He's a good lad, he will do that lot in one

table top machine over the weekend and still transport 20 lots of

guests from the Station to the B&B in the mean time. In fact, I

think I can just spot a guests arm sticking out from under the bedding.

Looks like he's having a breather there, I shall give him call !! [;-)]

Hope he hasn't been going to all the parties on the 3rd floor, next door to the Druggist [:)]
