Frederick
If you are like me and use the Poole to Cherbourg overnight run getting only 4 hours or so sleep and you leave the ferry wishing you had a few hours more ...Have you noticed if heading down to the South West you get a full 8 hours sleep going Portsmouth to St Malo have a shorter drive time and the fare is only £6 more .....If coming up from the West of the UK to Poole it might be worth considering going through to Portsmouth for the time / fuel cost advantage on the French side ...Poole crossing time by night 6 and a half hours .Portsmouth crossing time by night 11 hours its worth considering . LisaJ
Only time we did it we had a Storm Force 12 in the channel. Not much sleep to start with, then it calmed down a bit and we woke up to find we had been in the lee of Jersey all night and had another four hours to go...regardsL

Kitty
I used to travel back Portsmouth-Caen with overnight cabin - now travel afternoon, arrive Caen approx 10pm, good small hotel within couple hundred yards, ensuite (single) room for 28 Euros. Good night's sleep before driving south, and much less expensive.
