woolybanana
Isn't it known as the 'airport of the dead' because so many flights are cancelled in winter due to fog?
Pickles
Ryanair is transferring flights from Manchester to Leeds/Bradford. Six hundred people at Manchester may lose their jobs,
Ryanair's press release talks of "up to" 600 jobs being lost. The only direct job losses are with the handling staff employed by the subcontractors at the airport: a VERY small proportion of 600 (though obviously if you're one of the ones affected, you are being put out of work at a very bad time). The rest of the 600 jobs are mainly a figment of the imagination, and come under the heading of "how long is a piece of string?"Reading between the lines and taking into account MAG's (Manchester Airport Group's) response, it would seem that the introductory offer prices (on landing fees, etc) available to airlines setting up new services have expired, and MAG was not willing to allow Ryanair to operate for free from Manchester Airport. In doing so they will have taken into account various factors:that if they allow Ryanair to operate for free, then this would damage the relationship that they have with their other incumbent airlines;that Ryanair's practices re dissuasion of customers from having checked-in baggage and attention to the weight of carry-on baggage at the gate will dissuade Ryanair passengers from purchases at the airportthat essentially the only revenue that the airport stands to make from Ryanair customers is car parking fees.As MAG has said "(Ryanair) made us an offer we could refuse". MAG evidently thinks that it would be less harmful to their business to allow Ryanair to walk away - oh, apart from the Dublin route which is evidently a good money-earner for Ryanair...RegardsPickles
