NickP
I suppose it all depends on your locations both sides of the water, but to us in the Vendome area then travelling to Surrey the Tunnel beats all hands down; even paying the premium on our frequent traveller tickets to leave England during the morning. LD lines would be OK but the small amount of time saved driving on the French side is lost with the boat journey time. Plus of course the LD ferry only runs twice a day. Calais/Dover ferry, longer journey and sometimes 20 minutes to get out of Dover Harbour. then 15 minutes later you pass the Tunnel entrance. So little saving on money but time wasted travelling. Another plus of course with the Tunnel, you don't get surrounded by coach loads of screaming kids running amok.[:)]
Théière
I agree NickP, as a long term user of Transmanche and LD afterwards it was a really good service. Turn up in the evening at Newhaven, grab some supper then get head down in one of the cabins for a good night's sleep. Up, showered and breakfasted then back on the road enjoying not only 1.5 hours less driving but the associated saving in fuel cost and tolls made it a good option. With the opening of the bridge in Rouen another 30 mins saved on the journey south so although the face value of the ferry ticket was always higher the real cost was always competitive and driving less tired is safer!Unfortunately with LD lines taking over they boosted the cost of a van on board, the old Transmanche was commercial freight mainly, so it didn't raise an eyebrow or a cost issue but now too expensive compared to the tunnel on frequent traveller. tonyinfrance
We live in Brighton so Newhaven is only 15 minutes away, making LD Lines a no-brainer for us.I'm less keen on the new bulk ticket scheme but haven't had time to properly measure it against the previous frequent traveller promotion
