Rob Roy
I took this catapiller away from my young cats yesterday - but have never seen one like it before. Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to what it will become? Bit of an ugly brute to my mind!
Suninfrance
Don't quote me Rob Roy as I haven't googled it yet - but could it be one of the Hawkmoth variety of caterpillar. I'm sure Chris PP will know.
Suninfrance
OK - just googled images and it looks like either an Elephant Hawkmoth or an Emperor Hawkmoth. I'd go for the Elephant Hawkmoth myself.Jan

Rob Roy
Yes that seems to be it. When I Googled EHM it mentioned that the catapillers often feed on Fushias, which would tie in with where I found it.Thanks everyone.
Jonzjob
I agree with you Chris. It got it's name from having an elephant like trunk when it's relaxed, but when threatened it pulls it back and transformes it face like your photo. When it pupates it will look like this, but it will be alive. tis one was alive when I first saw it, but a couple of days later i found it dead, poor beautiful thing. I still have it and it is still wonderful to look at.
