Tancrède
Elytron - Fr: hanneton - maybug. Melolontha melolontha.Dare one say cockchafer even?Hurrah, how about that? The national-symbol-of-France-word has not been censored!
Kittycat
Thanks for the quick response. I wondered if it could be a cockchafer as I've often found their grubs when turning over the compost heap. I discounted that idea initially, as all the photo's I found on the web show them with black and white bands on the underside of the abdomen. Is it possible for their markings to vary with age or location ?I've just noticed on all the cockchafer pictures that their antennae have a kind of 'fan' at the end. This insect did not have that. chris pp
It's a young cricket, (grillon), possibly grylllus campestris, but I'm not completely convinced of that, definitely a cricket anyway.Chris

Phil & Pat
Lives in burrows in our lawn and makes noises like a cricket, so I would agree it's a cricket.
Kittycat
Thanks everyone. I wondered about crickets, as the back legs reminded me of them so I reckon I'll go for that then!
