Rich1972
HiI was splitting logs yesterday and one was rather rotten. Upon opening it I found an ants' nest inside along with two gigantic grey/white grubs! They were about three inches long and the width of my finger. The body of the grubs was clearly divided into well-defined sections. Any idea what these creatures were?Rich[8-)]

Rich1972
Yeah, maybe they're stag beetle grubs. They're at least three inches long. Huge things, like fat white sausages and a sickly whitish, greyish colour:vomit smilie:

Loiseau
I found some of those in dead wood, as well. Ugh.I looked them up and found they were indeed stag beetle grubs, so I have forgiven them for their temporary horrid appearance.Apparentloy the larvae live for up to six years, but once they turn into the beetle they live only a few months. There is a not very good picture here http://www.stagbeetlehelpline.co.uk/ (click on Picture Gallery to see the larva) Angela
