PaulT
It started as a retile of an outbuilding roof - now escalated to a reroof.Started removing the canal tiles and there were numerous nests on the southern side of the roof. So lots of wasps as I removed their 'homes' but no attacks. Then the decision to reroof so removal of boarding and more nests and once again a load of wasps but no attacks. Patf
You were very lucky, Paul! Maybe it depends what kind of wasps they were - when replacing tiles on our roof a worker got badly stung on his hands. The wasps with the dangly legs are the worst.
PaulT
Then Pat I was very, very lucky - they have the dangly legs.
woolybanana
Some areas of France seem to have been invaded by a something called the Frelon Asiatique (Asian Hornet) which is said to be more dangerous that your average hornet. Not sure that this is true, but be warned not to approach their nests which are often huge.

woolybanana
Never met one, never hope to get that close. Their nests are notifiable round here.
halfblind
Never met one, never hope to get that close. Their nests are notifiable round here.
But never under roof tiles with or without dangly legs ;-)
ventodue
Then Pat I was very, very lucky - they have the dangly legs.
@ Paul and Pat:Dangly legs = a Paper Wasp, most probably Polistes gallicus. Not the same (altho' related) as Common Wasp, Vespula vulgaris. Relatively common in France, not so in UK.The good news about these guys is that they're not very aggresive or intrusive - you have to do something really quite radical/silly to get stung. The bad news is that the sting hurts like bu88ery ...
