SaligoBay
That's exactly what I thought the first time a French person mentioned Don Quixote when I wasn't expecting it. And it still makes me smile
Merteuil2
"Mariage pluvieux, mariage heureux", a friend said to me once. I thought she was commenting on the fact that I was getting on a bit when I married. Took a few minutes before I realised that she was talking about the weather. Dick Smith
Once, in a 'crise' due to salmonella, a doctor asked (I thought) 'Avez-vous douleur des nuss?'. 'Que'est-ce que c'est les nuss? I replied, followed by doctor and French teacher doing a sort of La Petomaine impersonation, bending forwards and pointing to their bottoms. He had said 'de l'anus'. Laugh? Well no, actually, far too risky...RegardsDickBONO ANIMO ES

Mistral
Try talking about Van Gogh. I once worked in a collge with that name and had to learn to pronounce it Vann Goggg if I wanted to be understood. It's not just non French speakers who have this problem. For years my husband heard the bit in the communion service "prenez et mangez-en tous" (take, eat all of you) as "prenez et mangez-en douce" (take, eat in secret)
