Don't leave me hanging on the phone...

Help!

I run a small auberge and can no longer avoid having an answering machine but I need help with composing an outgoing message. I've tried ringing other businesses in the area that I know are closed for the season but my French is not good enough to catch their message. Anyone got time in this hectic season to help out?

Cheers!

Hi,

Bonjour,vous êtes bien chez
(the name of your auberge) nous ne sommes

pas là pour le moment. Alors laissez-nous votre message après le bip sonor et nous vous rappellerons.

Then if you expect English speaking clients to call, which no doubt you

will,  leave a similar message in English afterwards.

More importantly though, is to get a mobile phone and when you are out

transfer your calls from your fixed phone to your mobile. Many folks

will not leave a message when it comes to booking hotels, B&B's

etc, not so bad with gîtes but people like to book instantly with

inn  type affairs and we only rresort to answer phones during

certain spells in the year.

By the way,  as usual there is more than one way to skin a cat, so this

will not be the only message you can leave but this one is short and

sweet and gets quickly to the point and one that has served us well for

yonks !

Sorry Katt, but ... " vous avez atteint " is not correct french " !

If you aim Madame Smith with a gun, and pull the trigger, then you can say : Vous avez atteint Madame Smith !!! :)

Vous êtes bien chez Madame Smith ... is correct !

Don't use your phone as a gun ! :) :) :)

I suggest ignore the conventions of both languages and record a messge which people can undestand in either language.

<< Ferme jusque 21st - Vingt et Une janvier - Message après le Beep Sonnaire en Anglais ou Français avec votre numéraux >>.

If the message in any language is longer than 20 words I normally assume I have better things to do with my life.
