Bereavement - What to say?

I have just received the sad news that our neighbour in France has died, in her 85th year. She was a marvellous woman, I wish I had a tenth of her strength.

What do I say/write to her son? The funeral was last week, I shall be seeing him on Sunday. "Je suis désolée" seems a bit crass. It won't be an occasion for approximate language.

Any help gratefully received.

J'ai appris la triste nouvelle du décès de X et je tenais à vous exprimer mes condoléances...

Based on this sample letter:

Cher ami,

Je viens de prendre connaissance du décès de

Jean. Nous savons qu'inéluctablement, un jour, l'existence se termine

pour chacun d’entre nous.

Ces quelques mots ne modifieront pas ce triste état de fait.

Pourtant je tiens à vous témoigner ma compassion.

Je partage votre douleur mais les mots me manquent pour l’exprimer pleinement.

Pour vous, j'espère voir cette épreuve s'effacer petit à petit, au fil du temps. 

Toute mon amitié.
