TWINKLE
For those of you who can't get the BBC in France here's a clip of Brel singing 'Amsterdam' - my favourite[:)] http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=pk7YxDzjTxA
Clair
When I hear Brel, Ferré, Nougaro, Leclerc, Higelin, Ferrat, Charlebois, Vigneault, I cannot think of any current singer who is as evocative, as poetic or as touching as they are in their songs. Tony F Dordogne
Watched it on first airing last Friday - it was just bloody brilliant, at last an appreciation of Brel in English. I have the big boxed set of his recordings which was released about 5 years ago and it's just great.Since I've been here I've got the word to many of his songs also so I can use them to learn French, sort of musical language disks - plus a number of other singers of course. Clair
There a very good biography of Brel written by Olivier Todd, which I bought about 20 years ago and in this œuvre intégrale, his lyrics read like poems, even though you cannot help singing them in your mind... I'm amazed to see that I only paid 48F for it back in 1982...[:-))]
Tony F Dordogne
Olivier Todd featured large in the programme - I'm going to buy his book as soon as I can get a copy.
Clair
The Jacques Brel program I mentioned in the OP is being repeated on BBC4 at 7:30pm tonight.
Will
Thanks for highlighting that it was a repeat Clair - I was getting a severe case of déjà vu there because it sounded exactly like a programme I'd seen a few months ago. Then I looked at the dates...My reason for mentioning it was that there was a very similar one about Jake Thackray - somebody who I was never that keen on when he was alive, but looking back there were so many similarities between him and the great francophone chansonneurs, like Brel and, in particular, Georges Brassens, whom he particularly admired. Who else remembers him?
Hoddy
I used to love Jake Thackray - I've still got an LP somewhere. I loved his quiet, droll sense of humour in his life as well as his songs. Hoddy

It was one of the first times I took my future wife out in England, and coming from Séte, the birthplace of Brassens, she was really impressed. Hoddy
We may have been at the same concert. I'm not sure he got much further south than this.Hoddy
raindog
LOL, amazing. A mate of mine was involved in running several folkclubs round there. If I remember rightly this one was at the rugby club by the river.
Hoddy
I don't remember a rugby club by the river, but then quite a bit of my memory of those days is hazy.Hoddy
