How do I write ' it should have been about'.

I'm writing a letter to my French friend and I wanted to write 'it was meant to be on/about...', but failed to find the most appropriate word in my dictionary. Then I thought, I won't write that, I'll write 'it should have been on/about...', thinking my French was up to that. Now I've written it, it doesn't look right.

I wrote: il devrait a été...

Is this correct.

Would: 'il était dire à...' translate to 'it was meant to be on/about...'

Regards,

Thanks Christine A,

I'll go with that, sorry I didn't thank you a second ago as I mis-took what your response said.

Edit (for the 3rd time...it's late!), nothing to do with time. I was trying to write ' my teacher was meant to ask me questions on my coursework' or ' she should have asked me....'.

It should have been = Ca aurait dû être...

It was meant to be = C'était censé se passer  ..

 Hope this helps..

I realize French is more difficult to learn than English..

Especially as regards the tenses, the " tu" et " vous"..

Oh lala !! [:)]

Thanks Christine, that's so much better than what I was going to write. I was going to use demander. I remember now, poser des questions. My teacher is always saying that.

Thanks again Frenchie, no, no, no, French is way harder than English.

No talent at all Ysatis , just learnt..

You know the famous " 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration" !! [:)]

The more I learn ( every day) , the more I realize I still have to learn, but it is  thrilling.

I LOVE your language.

Bien sûr qu'un jour tu parleras très bien le français !

Amicalement, Régine.

sorry Frenchie ' c'etait cense se passer'??????????? not it was meant to be about, but

c'etait cense se passer a Prague, mais en fait c'etait a Barcelone

Ma dissertation etait censee etre sur les banlieues, mais en fait j'ai parle du racisme en general.

or  : il aurait du s'agir des banlieues mais ...

Agree it's really not easy!
c'etait cense se passer a Prague, mais en fait c'etait a Barcelone
I'm guessing, but does that say ' it was meant to happen in Prague, but in fact it was in Barcelona.

And doesn't ' il s'agit de ' mean 'it is about ', as in a description of a eg: film or book, not quite was I was trying to say.

Past conditional...haven't learnt that tense yet.

Just curious, does anybody now how many tenses there are in French?  A new one seems to crop up all the time, just when I thought I was familiar with most of them.
