Useful phrases

The dust jacket of my Collins French - English dictionary describes its key features.

One panel  says : Enrich your knowledge of real French with examples  of authentic French context.

The examples given are:

rien faire poor vous - I can't do anything for you

on n'y peut rien - nothing can be done about it

désolé, mais je  n'y  peux rien - I'm sorry, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Makes you think the writer had a bitter run in with a fonctionnaire or customer service[:D]

The most useful one I found in a pocket phrasebook was "may I use my tripod?". I'm still waiting for that event!

I used to have an old phrasebook that was full of stuff like that. It provided lots of laughs.

It was diificult to imagine some of the  situations travellers apparently got into!

I have been travelling in Greece for many years waiting to use the following immortal phrase from my Greek phrase book.

"I say my good man, show me your hand woven stuffs"

Strange really, the occasion never seems to have arisen![:D]

The AA essential french phrase boos has some interesting ones,

 

for example,

 

"seulement en utilisant un préservatif"

"il faut étre prudent à cause du sida"

"je n'ai pas d'aussi forts sentiments pour toi"
