Chrissie
While chatting last week I found that Cinderella never originally had a glass slipper - she had "une pantoufle en vair" which is a slipper made of squirrel fur. [blink] How could so many, including Walt Disney, get it wrong!!!
Cat
In the first French version of the story, it was a "pantoufle de verre" http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k892935 so it can never really have been a mistranslation of the word vair. The origins of the Cinderella story are thought to be Chinese, and in that version it was a golden slipper.
Clair
In Old French, vair also meant "of variegated colour", so it could be that the slipper was made of material of variegated colour.Something to read: Charles Perrault
Chrissie
Well, glass or gold would certainly be more suitable than fur - I mean, can't you just see her shuffling around the posh ballroom in her wonderful gown and....furry slippers......doesn't work for me!Chrissie (81)
Cat
I expect WB will be along soon to offer an alternative view on what significance maidens slipping into their "fur slippers" may have had in some versions [Www]

woolybanana
Well, I was invited to join, so here is the Banana take on Cinderella; the slipper was made of beaver fur which is why there was so much commotion. Work it out!! But, imagine the poor prince picking up and handling a slipper made of the stuff. No wonder he went loopy trying to find her.
