I have mentioned this blog before in threads concerning food topics but it as contains an amusing section specific to the use of food-related idioms, it deserves a mention  in the French language section too...[:)]

Clair, I adore the food idioms.  Only recently, I told my French teacher that "je boire du petit lait" when I was the one in class explaining some grammatical point to the others and I was the "show-off".

Then, now my poor OH is hors de combat (with a broken knee-cap), I told the class "j'ai du pain sur la planche"!

Perhaps, I'll now achieve a bit of credibility?

Nah, the scones I baked for the class weren't my best effort, but perhaps the knowledge of food idioms will redress the balance.

Sweet, your husband's accident tombe comme un cheveu sur la soupe and vous n'êtes pas sortis de l'auberge!

Ça va pas être de la tarte* et Il va falloir mettre la main à la pâte...

At least, you'll know that tu auras gagné ton pain à la sueur de ton front**!

I trust that il n'en fait pas tout un fromage*** and that la moutarde ne te monte pas au nez*** [:)]

* Ça va pas être de la tarte = it's not going to be easy

** gagner son pain à la sueur de son front = to work hard fro the money

*** en faire tout un fromage = to make a big deal of something

**** la moutarde te monte au nez = you are getting cross

Forgot to say, Clair, that one of my absolute favourites has got to be:

tu n'attachais tes chiens avec des saucisses (taught to me by Frenchie).

It's just the thought............ which is so absurd that I laugh just thinking about it!
