A bit like the masculin possesive being used in front of feminin nouns like ton aide? Its made me realise that I rarely if ever use nouveau in speech except for the plural form and I should make an effort to start using it before the bad habit sticks so I would really like to know the answer or rule. Its yet another example of speaking the language reasonably well but lacking the teaching at a basic level. Christine Animal
I'm not much good at explaining either, but yes, I would say nouvel is only in front of a vowel. For nouveau, Beaujolais nouveau, c'est tout nouveau ça vient de sortir. mint
Yes, I think of nouvel like bel: eg, the masculin of belle is beau except when it is a man when he is "un bel homme"!So, nouvel is used in front of masculine nouns that begin with a vowel, beh voila! Don't you think it's all these exceptions that make the language at one and the same time so fascinating and infuriating?[;-)]
