I'm trying to send an email to a hospital consultant who sees Mrs G (professionally, of course!!)

His address is x-xxxxxx@etc, but my emails are bouncing back as undeliverable. I rang the hospital secretariat, who seemed to say that I had it all correct, but that it was "Tiret le six" (or at least I think that's what she said.  It isn't an underscore, because I've tried that too.

Any ideas anybody?  Thanks in anticipation.

Pickles - This is the message that I got back as the 'undeliverable'.

x-xxxxxxx@chu-montpellier.fr>: host mail2.chu-montpellier.fr [195.83.227.20] refused to talk to me: 550 5.7.1

Service unavailable; Client host [xx.xx.xxx.xx] blocked using Trend Micro RBL+.

Please see http://www.mail-abuse.com/cgi-bin/lookup?ip_address=xx.xx.xxx.xx

Mail from xx.xx.xxx.xx blocked using Trend Micro Email Reputation database.

WB & Eurotrash - thanks for that, but presumably there's only one type of hyphen (apart from underscore)?

As Pickles has hinted, it may be down to something in the above message. I've had similar problems before in trying to send messages to AOL addresses - it took ages to sort out.

Sounds as if they have a block on sfr for some reason.

Have you tried with a webmail such as gmail?

Can also be a word in the message header which they have flagged as spam.

They seem to be treating your mail as coming from a spammer

They are using Trend micro as a filter

As for the address the chu-montpellier.fr part is fine.

I have used it quite often

Exchanging emails with a French friend she asked me to stop using accents (from Lexibar if I remember correctly) as they came out as strange characters eg %, @, etc etc. She said it was easier to work out the accents I hadn't put in rather than guess what were the underlying accented letters that had been substituted.

Something to do with character sets I believe.

Maybe that is what is happening.

never seen an accent in an email address, I didn't think you could!

I agree with the others, sounds like it's not the recipient's email address that's the problem it's your address that is being blocked by their mail server (is it a UK address?), that's why I suggested sending it from a different email address ....

I second NormanH's interpretation

Thanks gentlemen, and to everybody else who has made suggestions.

I'm going to try one more time leaving out the 'subject' (which read 'Message from XXXX') and see if it gets through.

If that fails, I'll just leave a message with the secretariat and ask for him to give us a ring when he has a moment. Happily its not an urgent problem.

Hi,

i'm an IT tech working in a hospital. Just to let you know that you are not the only one having this problem.

The anti-spam created by Trend-Micro (and used by a lot of hospitals) has recently blocked a load of mails comming from random sfr accounts. I've already contacted Trend Micro informing them or this, but no luck, we have to wait for SFR to do somthing

changing the subject of your mail will not help since it is your mail provider that is being blocked and not the content.

From waht I've found out (been searching google and came across your post ...) not all SFR mail servers are classed as spam, so you might get luck with a resend, but don't count on it.

the easiest way around it is to send your mails via another mail service (like gmail).

Hope that helps.

pint2stone ............

Thanks for that - what you describe was precisely the problem.

I gave up in the end and just left a message with his secretary to which I received a reply. No problem, except that this 'difficulty' cuts off the quickest and easiest way of contacting the gentleman concerned without having to get past a secretary who wants chapter and verse on the reason for your call.

By the way, he has often said email me if you need assistance  / advice, so we weren't trying to buck the system.

Wow that was a quick reply ^^ (yes my nick is a bit strange, An english guy growing up in france does get a load of nicknames, especialy with beer and that one just stuck)

More on subject, don't worry, it is not you that is clased as spammer but internal mail servers at SFR. I take care of over 200 computers / accounts at work so I've seen this prob many times over the past month. it will eventualy sort it self out. we just have to wait for SFR to contact Trend Micro.

I've already tried to contact trend micro myself but got a negatave reply. Since it is SFR adresses that are blocked and not our personal IP, I can't get much done.

As stated in my first post, the easiest way round it is to use another mail account other than SFR. For the moment, I re-send all mails that are blocked via a gmail acount. But any free mailing system will work (hotmail, yahoo, ...).

If I get any news back from SFR, I'll post here.

I mentioned gmail a few posts back.

I often mail the chu at montpellier and Vald'Aurelle, as I have good contacts with a couple of the younger Doctors who reply (in one case from his Blackberry on holiday, although I wouldn't have mailed if I had known..)
