Tu or vous? Handy American explanation...

Loved the bit about Bernadette[:D]

I also think it depends on what sort of family is from, my neighbours always vous'd one another. And my son's girlfriend always 'vous' me, even though I 'tu' her. If that will ever stop, I do not know, but I don't mind, I reckon she will always 'vous' my husband though, I suspect she finds him intimidating.

Yes, I liked that too, idun!

I remember my first visit to France, on a one-month language course, and everybody said "tu" (as we were all fellow students). And I was aghast, as we had only learned "vous" in school!

My OH plays golf and all golfers use "tu" with each other.

He is so used to doing that that our notaire, our plumber, the caissière in Super U, in fact everyone, is somewhat surprised to be so familiarly addressed.

I am not sure he will ever stop, but there you go.
