Patf
What's the difference between these different words for field? And are there any more words of similar meaning?
NormanH
champ, pré, pâturage, prairie, friches...friche seems to me to be like wasteland/abandonedpâturage 'pasture' for feedpré more like an arable fieldchamps more general..but this is without looking it up and just off the top of my head
andyh4
Around here, prairie is used for large open grassland fields with few proper boundaries. typically they end where the forest starts but with no fences or walls.
Patf
Thanks to both. I had a form to fill in, for a wildlife survey, and it asked about the area around us.The French seem to have a lot of words for fields, like the eskimos for snow. Loiseau
We'll, I'd call it a champ if it had crops in it, and a pré if it was grassy, with grazing animals.Prairie - yes, massive, arable, no fences in sight.Angela
Patf
That's what I thought for champ Angela. And prairie, sort of open field with wild flowers etc. There are what they call prairie fleuri here, very colourful with cosmos etc.The questionnaire asked how far we are from each of those. Loiseau
Ah yes, Patf, but I don't think "prairie" would *necessarily* be prettily sown with wild flowers.A bit like the difference between a "wild-flower meadow" in English, and "meadow" on its own - which simply means pasture ( Gosh, look how many words we have in English, too!)Angela
NormanH
I found this which supports Loiseau's post;le champ, c'est un terrain sur lequel on cultive des choses... les animaux ne vont pas au champ mais au pré, qui est un endrois ou il y a de l'herbe .... Loiseau
Thanks for the corroboration, Norman! It reminds me of a little comptine we learned at school:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9EiZyoTVpH4Obviously they're going to the champs, because that's where the leftover grains are to be found!Angela
