JudyM
Posted a pressie to UK today - am just hoping it will get to the recipient in time... While I was waiting in the queue at La Poste, I picked up a leaflet for a competition, to design a new postage stamp (specifically the 'Marianne') for next year. Winner will be chosen by the President in May next year I think. (I added these details in case the Forum artists fancied a go at the competition!) Now, I know that Marianne is the girly on the stamp - but who is/was she?JudyM
Moonstone
Marianne is a symbol of the French Revolution. She is the heroine of the Delacroix painting Liberty Guiding the People, charging the barricades at the head of a ragtag army. The person to represent her is chosen by France's mayors. Previous Mariannes have been Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve. Apparently the latest is a chat show hostess.Gerry
