Just been to Borders again!!! bought a smashing little pocket book entitled 'The Rough Guide Chronicle France'.

A perfect little book giving a chronological history of France, perfect for picking out dates for further research and if you're like me and don't know much French history apart from the Plantagenets, it's a very useful tool to point you in the right direction.

As a genealogist with french connections as well, it helps to put history in context both here and in France, when 4x Gr Grandmother was having her 7th son, so to speak.

For your info isbn 1-85828-826-6, author Ian Littlewood, website www.roughguides.com

Thanks for this - I'll look out for it. I bought a very simple summary of the history of French Royalty at a tourist site last year in France, but it was very lacking.

Watched my DVD of La Reine Margot a couple of weeks ago and it didn't seem to tie in very well with the Jean Plaidy books I read years ago, so I'd certainly like to know more about that era.

Is it as inaccurate as most other French History books ?

like the ones that tell you that a Frenchman invented the TV, the telephone and that the French didn't really loose at Waterloo afterall. but them again perhaps it is Anglophone history that is all wrong

Picking-up on SaligoBay's thread - who does it say came up with the idea of the Bidet? The Original Mr Burlington who, as children, we thought must have invented the WC, seems to have found no place in English history books.

Hi Guys

If anybody is interested in the French Wars of Religion (abt 1550 to 1720). including the time in which La Reine Margot was set (it's a novel but good nevertheless)contact me directly and I can give you some other books that might interest you - I'm an historical researcher who specialises in French and European Huguenot/Calvinist history, family research and stuff like that and can point people in the direction of some easy introduction stuff.

Regards
