Headless Statue

Causette

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help please? There is a house in Lisieux (14) which has a statue set into a niche in the wall. This statue is of a man who could be either a saint, a bishop, or even a king (difficult to tell which). Anyway, said chap has his head in his hands. A friend has a vague recollection of a story of someone who was beheaded and got up and carried his head... Anyone know any more about who this could be?

Thanks!

Hi,

I think it's likely to be St Denis - the patron saint of France, who was put to death on "The Martyr's Hill" - Montmartre.(c. 250AD?)

The crowd was amazed to see Denis's corpse pick up the head & carry it under his arm to the site where now stands the cathedral of St. Denis.

Feast day; 9th Oct.

Barbara.
