letrangere
I'm sure none of us here believe this but it clearly concerns some. Newly appointed Director of my local Alliance Francaise interviewed in the paper this morning. Bear in mind he's worked primarily in the developing world (Mauritania, Egypt, Bangladesh) where many young people aspire to travel or pursue higher education in the US or Britain, and France generally may be viewed rather differently than, say, from Britain. His comments make interesting reading nonetheless. "France suffers from a reputation of ingrained traditions that can seem a bit old-fashioned, but I want to show people how modern France can be in areas like scientific research, technology and education. France isn't just about eating and drinking." I keep being drawn back to his use of "suffers from", not so sure I agree that ingrained traditions are a negative thing. Anyone else got any comments? I plan to drop in and dit "bonjour" when I'm changing my library books next week. M
