Petitechick
Saw that a new french film is out soon- un long dimanche de fiancailles, with the actress from Amelie, was surprised to see Jodie Foster in the list of actors and even more surprised that she is in fact a fluent french speaker! Not sure if she has a french parent or whether she grew up partly in France. Does anyone know if she has done any other french speaking films? am intrigued that she is an accomplished speaker, not that it is anything that unusual. Mistral
If I remember right, she doesn't have French speaking parents, nor did she grow up in France. She went to a French lycée in whatever town she comes from in America. Apparently she inststs on dubbing her English language films into French herself. Tourangelle
I think that although she does dub her own films, this is her first in French. But her French is perfect, isn't it.
letrangere
According to a Telegraph correspondent in Paris, Foster "delivers her lines in the impeccable French she learned as a pupil of the Lycee Francais in Los Angeles". But there's more to it than that. Under the title of "when is a French film not a French film?", we're told that the director has been criticised for making a film with French state funding that is deemed by some as not French enough. Although it was made in French, on location in France with a French production team and cast of 2,200, the bulk of the $50m budget was provided by Warners Bros's French subsidiary. (So why did it require additional state money?) Foster's role is quite small apparently and, surprise, surprise, is merely a concession to Hollywood. Patmobile
No surprise here. Jodie Foster is so brilliant and wonderful she can probably speak fluent Swahili and Cantonese as well - cook like Paul Bocuse, paint like Michelangelo, and sing like Callas. She can even act.
