I was a child at the time, but I do remember the incident and the continued furore which followed. If I recall correctly the British press adopted an air of superiority about French police methods (possibly justified) and the existence of a peasant culture.

I too have these recollections of the story. Certainly it was well and truly stuck in my memory when I hitch-hiked alone in France (Note: that was in my youth, I would not do it now!).

The "film" implied that Scotland Yard found the "peasant killing" story, implausible as it was, perfectly satisfactory and preferable to an investigation of the other possibilities.

A lot of background information seemed to come from the English press, The Sunday Times was mentioned many many times.
