Il était une fois dans l'Oued

Wow!!  Why do French yoof waste their time on mind-altering drugs when they only have to watch films like this!!!

I really liked it.  Good-natured, a touch surreal, a soupçon of silliness, and a completely over-the-top fairy-tale ending.  And I no longer feel the need to go to Algeria, I feel like I've been there.  In fact, I came out of the cinema and thought with relief "it's so nice to be back in France, it's so calm and civilised".

I liked the HLM setting at the beginning, and loved the 100km tailback to go on holiday, then the bordelle to get onto the boat.  And it was quite clever how the dad's personality changed.  It hadn't even dawned on me until the little boy said "Dad hasn't hit me since we got to Algeria, it's not normal".

And that's it, really.  It was nice and it was funny.  It wasn't intellectual, it wasn't moral, it was just an unusual piece of escapism.

Par contre, I will NOT be going to see Palais Royal (?) which looks frightful and nasty. So there!
