Ooh La Vache !

I suppose it's the "Cow Parade".  We had one in London a few years ago.  Companies could sponsor a cow - which were available in a variety of postures (the cows, not the companies), and then commission someone to paint it, or have their own logo or something. They were then placed in bizarre venues; some were very funny.  I think it's an American concept (surprise!). Afterwards they were auctioned at Sotheby's and the proceeds went to charity.

There's one on the roof terrace of a modern house near me in London. It has SALT on its flank in large letters.  I spent ages squinting up when driving past (v dangerous) to see if there was another cow labelled PEPPER, but eventually realised that there was just the one - and that it said BEEF on its other side.

I saw the first "parade" in Chicago - not that I went specially [:)] - and this info explains some of the background. It was an entertaining idea but visually, somehow it didn't seem to work as well in London. Haven't seen any of the others. From Artifact:

URL: http://www.cowparade.net/

Description: From 1999 in Chicago and New York onwards, cities throughout the world have taken part in the cow parade (CowParade). The sculptural templates were originally designed by Pascal Knapp specifically to be an art canvass and remain the same from city to city. However, the artists in each participating city paint their own interpretation, inspired by their city's cultural influences. Funded by sponsorship opportunities, the cows are often auctioned for charity at the end of the event. The CowParade also encourages art education, with a Cows in Schools programme. The web site provides information about the current CowParade events and also shows an archive of past ones. There are 'call to artists' and 'be a sponsor' sections with application forms downloadable in PDF format. An opportunity is provided to subscribe to an online newsletter and the 'about us' section explains more about the original project.
