colinstone
Here we are in the middle of the game season and not a pheasant or sanglier in the butchers. So much for the marvellous french food. Anyone know why the availability of game is so dire??
woolybanana
The French only really eat it if they have shot it or in the Festive season. Ask your local butcher to get some in.
chrisb
Game's so widely available in the U.K. these days that it always seems strange to see so little of it on open sale in France. We have one person near us in France who has pheasants for sale - but they are farmed and no match for the free flying ones we're used to in England. The one honourable exception is rabbit - though I think some of what the supermarkets have is actually imported. Fi
Have been offered sanglier at 2 euros/kg . All dependent on the luck of the hunter of course, so it could arrive tomorrow, or Christmas Eve or never. Have also been given the occasional bunny, but that's about it. Our local butcher has a small selection, and there is no problem getting ostrich etc at Intermarche (!), but "bog standard" game seems tricky to get hold of. The hunters must keep it all for themselves. (greedy lot!).Fi
NormanH
There used to be rather severe restrictions on the sale, partly on grounds of hygiene (the risk of contaminated meat being high if the animal hasn't been given the all-clear), but this has been lifted since 2006.The new rules are clearly explained in the fourth paragraph on this page:http://dianehautsbosc.canalblog.com/archives/2008/11/03/11218578.html
Patf
I think the season for shooting game birds starts in mid -September, so that's when it's at its peak, then dwindles off. Then they go onto something else. At the moment it's deer. For the xmas holidays the choice seems to be turkey, or pintade, or of course foie gras. And oysters.
