sueyh
Are fish counters generally open on a Monday in supermarkets in France. We are planning a dinner and just thought of fish and I have a feeling they all shut Monday.Suey

Patf
Some are and some aren't.I find that SuperU are best for fish - freshest and cheapest. They are closed on Mondays, and everything seems fresh on Tuesday. But you can buy fish in Mirande market, and in Carrefour and Intermarche on Mondays. Not sure if it's fresh, or kept in the fridge/freezer since Friday.

Mr Coeur de Lion
I want to know why every L'Eclerc I have been to, as you approach the entrance to the shop, it always stinks of fish, even the the fish counter is on the other side of the shop.I've been to several and they all stink. Surprised it doesn't put people off.

Mr Coeur de Lion
lol who knows what it is then, but I've only noticed it at L'Eclerc.I'll have to have a sniff if I go to another supermarket.
woolybanana
Never on a Monday, and watch Tuesday too!
Babbles
I was told Intermarche has its own fishing fleet, so their fish is normally good and fresh as it doesn't have to go via a market and distibutor, but they don't have deliveries everyday and I'd still avoid Mondays
babcock
In England traditionaly you couldn't buy fresh fish on a Monday as the fishermen didn't go to sea on a Sunday. I don't know when this faded out. It seems that is still current in parts of France.
NormanH
Not only Fish.In my town Les Halles and the food shops around them are all closed on Mondays.
Patf
Who on earth buys fish in a Supermarket???It's obviously days old.
When we first came here there was an independent fishmonger who sold very good fish. He was never open on Mondays. His shop was right next to Champion and when they expanded they bought him out. So we have no real choice here now.We used to live in Hull and were always able to get fresh fish there, though the choice was poor - mainly cod or haddock. mint
You spoilt woman, Patf!If I could buy cod or haddock that I could readily afford, I'd be a very happy woman indeed.BTW, can anyone readily get undyed smoked cod or haddock that doesn't require a bank loan before you buy it?
