Chancer
My extremely tight living budget has meant me giving up many foods that I like and I am gradually becoming malbouffé, when even sausages had became a luxury it was time to look at the situation in detail.I had long since given up my beloved saucisses de Toulouse in favor of merguez when I made a happy discovery, Aldi sell saucisses fumées à cuire for only €1.69 for 400g and when cooked they are a delight, to my palate they are similar but meatier and nicer than saucisses de Toulouse and have the harder skin that a choucroute sausage has.I could not help but notice how little fat or water was released when cooking compared to the other sausages and how much more net saucisse there was on the plate. So over the last couple of weeks I have been weighing before and after cooking and was surprised at the results. The merguez lost 45% of their mass during cooking, the saucisses de Toulouse 22.5% and the saucisses fumées only 5%When you factor in the losses what you actually end up paying for the food on your plate is:€4.44 per kg for the saucisses fumées€6.85 per kg for the saucisses de ToulouseAnd €10.96 per kg for the merguez [:-))]Prices were from Aldi and LidlSo sausage lovers, give the Aldi ones a try, you wont regret it. As a near-veggie I ask as I have only ever seen ready-made leek sausages for sale in the UK.

Chancer
I'll happily give them a go Dog, where can I get some? Now that you have somewhat toned down your vegetarian evangelicism (hope thats the right word) your message comes across much better, I was really impressed when I read that you not only buy non-leather shoes but will travel the length of the country to get them.I admire the courage of your convictions in the same way that I can admire a politicians conviction even if I dont agree with his politics.P.S. It only takes seconds to weigh them and I am already well used to comparing the price per kg rather than the price on the packet.Lidl sausages consistently weigh 3% less than the net weight on the packet, probably the tolerance allowed by law. Dog
The only political convictions I like are those meeted out to Aitkin and Archer.Sorry you will have to google a recipe.Across the road from my factory in UK was a meat supplier that specialised in buying chickens then injecting them with water, pig skin and chemicals - he thought it hilarious that he could boost the profit margin so simply. Dog
Tonight we are having refried beans. Tasty and cheap. I have noticed that supermarkets in France sell El Paso stuff to make ersatz mexican food but they do not sell the staple refried beans in a tin. Doesn't bother me as we make our own and freeze them. osie
Those prices for the sausages sound pretty expensive.. for the same price you could get basse cote de boeuf .. a really great cheap meat.I would suggest checking the promotions at intermarche as they do (at least here) each week a meat type promotion. You can see the latest offers on line. Some prices would be :-Toulouse sausage as little as 3.50€ /kgentrecote 8-10€/kgbasse cote de boeuf 5-8€ /kgcote/echine de proc is regularly 2-3€ /kg.... at the moment it is 1.90€ / kg... great meat, cheap, tasty, on the bone etc etc

They were supposed to look like potatoe croquettes.Another favourite was to substitute mushrooms instead of meat for a strogonoff.BTW I still enjoy my meat and 2 veg, variety is the spice of life....
