NormanH
In a supermarket at Sète.It is so disgusting that nobody would buy it (see the photos http://www.midilibre.fr/2011/07/30/300-kilos-de-viande-et-legumes-avaries-dans-la-superette,364066.php )but what if this is only the thin end of the wedge? Patf
That is really disgusting. I wonder if the H&S in France will prosecute? More like caveat emptor I should think.
Albert the InfoGipsy
That's a shut-down offence. I'm a volunteer with the banque alimentaire and we have to obey the same hygiene regs as commercial outlets. Funnily enough, I believe that the food safety department is a branch of the government Vetinerary Service.
NormanH
That's an excellent way to get into your local community. I believe 5e has recommended that sort of volunteering before
5-element
But I believe Albert is so well integrated that he is practically French. It is even better when those without French ties take the plunge and volunteer for that kind of organisation, I believe there are a few on this forum who do.As for the SPAR in Sète, it is incredible that they were able to get that far in rottenness before they got closed down. I am now more and more careful with what I buy in the grandes surfaces, especially meat or fish or anything perishable - I think that on occasion, I have come across produce that was close to the one in the article. Val_2
I gagged when I saw those photos and read the article. Dosn't surprise me though as I have seen even the big supers keep mouldy stuff on shelves or let the fruit and veg go off so people just walked past it all. Not sure if it includes fruit and veg tho.
Mac
Inspections in large supermarkets in the UK are carried out by Enviromental Health Officers( for food safety) or Trading Standards officers( for weight/packaging issues ect)-they have automatic right of entry with no warning of visits.
