Evianers
My mother is dying of cancer and does not have long to live. My siblings are the executors of her will. They live in the UK, we live in France. Does anyone know for certain pleasure, how long after her demise the will has to be read? Are we sure to obtain a copy of it? Although I trust my siblings to a large extent, neither are not very well off, so......Hope there is someone here who can give relative information and if so, many thanks. cooperlola
Afaik, a formal reading of the will is no longer required. I've now twice been an executor and in both cases the solicitor handled all the legal side and informed the beneficiaries for me. All I did was the distribution of goods - all the money was paid out from the accounts by the solicitors. You can ask for a copy of the will once your mother dies, if you are a beneficiary.I'm sure a legal type will be along soon to give you more info'.Sorry to hear about your mother - hope she doesn't suffer too much. Pickles
There is no "reading of the will" in the UK. The executor submits the will as part of the process of obtaining a grant of probate. At that point the will becomes a public document and you (or anyone) can apply for a copy of it from the courts service if you have to. Alternatively - and generally rather more cheaply - get your sibling to provide you with an official copy of the will when they file it to get probate. They will be getting a couple of official copies anyway as this will help them with certain organisations, alongside copies of the grant of probate. Sorry to hear about your mother - it will be a difficult enough time ...RegardsPickles
Evianers
Thanks to both of you for the informative and fulsome answers. My mother is 95 and has had a long life: only just before Christmas did she have to go into a home; prior to that she was still in her apartment. idun
We obtained a copy of FIL's will as executor wouldn't let us see the will, I don't think that 'they' (family members) realised that we could end up with a copy. Didn't cost a lot as far as I remember.
Pickles
All you need is on the HMCS website:http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htmNote that you can put a standing search in place for £5 to receive a copy of the grant of probate and will immediately when they are issued (the standing search lasts for only six months though, but can be extended on payment of another £5).RegardsPickles
