Beam cleaning

I have a large central oak beam that I have removed the bits that have been 'eaten' from. This has resulted in the beam looking a bit patchy as the bits that I havn't needed  to scrape back are darker than the bits I have. My question is what should I use to get the beam back to one colour before applying a finish? I imagine the pre scraping  dark colour is caused by a mixture of dirt, tar(from an old open fire) and just aging. Is wood bleach the way to go, or is there another product I can use that would remove the surface 'crud'?

thanks

I think you're going to have to 'Carry On Scraping' [:D]

Mechanical methods would seem to be the way to go - if you use chemicals then there is the danger of not getting the result you want and you may not be able to recover from the 'error'.

A sander or perhaps wire brush to start may be a bit quicker than scraping by hand.

Oh well now I know that oxalic acid is for bleaching oak.

I have also remembered that it was my late grand-father who told me how to artificially age or patinate oak, it needs to be saturated in ammonia vapour, perhaps not one to try at home!
