Cheshiregirl
Hi PossumGirl,Having difficulty with link. Have entered in La Redoute but not coming up with item in their catalogue. Please could you supply e mail address or an address to write to purchase from. I am willing to pay postage cost. The advantage of this item is it is useful for camping and caravanning with no mains electric. When having a BBQ can bake potatoes on gas.I have had a clay potatoe baker for years but it as now cracked and needs replacing and cannot purchase one here in the UK as far as I am aware. I have searched the internet without finding any on sale in the UK. I really cannot understand as to why these clay potatoe bakers no longer seem to be on sale here in the UK as camping and caravanning is really on the up here due to gobal warming and there is a hugh demand. Should this article be sold in camping outlets it would sell like hot cakes! It is a shame as someone is missing a good business opportunity really.Answers greatly appreciated indeed! Catalpa
If it's what I think it is (my browser declined to show the product photo) the advantage of these things is the resulting slightly charred and smokey taste of the potatoes. Yum. I got one 25+ years ago when baked potatoes were about the limit / ambition of my kitchen expertise. I think they were supposed to cook the potatoes faster and more economically than conventionally in the oven. But they couldn't compete with the eventual widespread use of microwaves which were speedier - though the result was inferior. ps: I just had a look on the Lakeland site - www.lakelandlimited.co.uk - I'd like you to understand I did this at great personal risk as I have a tendency to spend money when I visit the website - and they don't have anything similar. But Lakeland do listen to customer requests so if you can convince them there's a market, maybe they'd find a manufacturer and start stocking them.[:D]
Cheshiregirl
Hi Catalpa,Yes could not agree with you more, the taste of the baked potatoe it like you say charred and smokey far more superior than cooked in the oven or the microwave ovens. Cheshiregirl
Hi again CatalpaRe Clay Potatoe BakerHave been in contact with Lakeland Buying Team who say they are not stocking the item at the present time. However that's does not solve my problem with obtaining a replacement. Just hope someone spots one somewhere and will kindly forward a contact address. It really is a shame that they do not seem to be available here in the UK. I did purchase my last one from Lakeland. I have asked them which pottery in France they where made at hoping that I could make contact with them and purchase one but Lakeland have not supplied this information. Anyway many thanks for your e mail and prompt reply.Cheshiregirl, Cheshire, UK.

I found another site http://www.cuisinstore.com/diable-a-pomme-de-terre which actually seems to have EXACTLY the item you described, which is slightly different than the one I purchased from La Redoute, but IS like the one I used to have in the U.S. I haven't purchased from these people before, but I'm sure they are okay. Otherwise, go to laredoute.fr and type in diable pommes de terre and it should get you to the page with the picture. I think their website is having a problem with the link I sent.Good luck. I do love mine.PG

I have a huge oven, and it uses a lot of gas, so I prefer to cook as much as possible in it all at the same time.PG

PossumGirl
How nice of you, Cheshiregirl!! I'm very pleased about you asking your library to get my book.As to the potato baker, I'm sure it will arrive soundly. I know that this type of item is usually very well-packed when I order. And, all this talk about baked potatoes, as well as the chilly, rainy weather we had yesterday, inspired me to make one of my favorite comfort meals: baked potatoes with poached egg. I hadn't had that since sometime in the spring and it was wonderfulBest,PG
