Supermarkets

When we are on holiday, Carrefour is our preffered choice (not that we have tried every chain), and Tesco at home.

Is there a difference between supermarkets in France like in the U.K e.g Waitrose and Kwiksave?

It's just something myself and my wife disscus when we are there, like ....why do mopeds not have number plates? where do the French go on holiday? why do motorists drive like Seb Loeb?

newer 2-wheels have to have one now

mainly France or French territories/former colonies (Guadeloupe, Tunisia, Marocco...)

because they think it's sissy not to!

In France a lot of supermarkets are locally-owned franchises, so there may be considerable variation in the range in any 2 given Super-Us for example. In general I find that Leclerc, Champion and Auchan all seem much of a muchness, Super-U and Coccinelle smaller and more localised. I never go to Aldi or Lidl (or Le Mutant).

Most certainly there are differences - and even within chains.  Since some of the big companies are actually franchises (L Eclerc - Super U) you can get quite significant differenes between 2 branches in the same area.  Trying to make like for like comparisons with UK supermarkets is difficult and leaves you open to others saying no it's not like that at all.

So at the risk of the wrath of every other forum member who will think I have down played or hammed up their favorite/least favorite:

Auchan most like Tesco with more non foods

Carrefore - Sainsbury

Super U - Coop

Aldi/Lidl - Aldi/Lidl

Cora - Tesco

Geant - Morrisons

Champion - Sainsbury or Tesco minimarkets

Intrermarché - Coop

Leclerc - Morrisons (but often not as big or with quite the range)

Spar - Spar

As always there will be plenty of exceptions

From what you write I think there must be huge regional differences too. The local LeClercs I know are huge and more like Tescos than Morrisons.

You don't mention Casino which is more like Morrisons in my opinion, and then there's Shopi .....

I can't see us ever reaching a countryside concensus on this one.

I reckon that's pretty close to the mark.

For us, the Leclerc near Avignon is the best bet, because it's plenty big enough and clean - however the Ales Leclerc is scruffy and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

One of the biggest 'selling points' for us is how many checkouts are manned. Most are hopeless, but Leclerc is good and Geant at Nimes have the self-scanning doofers which are excellent.

It is irrelevant how may tills are open and how long the queue is.  There is always a problem and you have to wait, even if you only have one person in front!

Ohhhh no it isn't.

They're always slower than I would ever be and I'm always grumpier than they could ever be.

But the doofers are good.  Used to have them in Safeway in the UK, till Morrisons took over and binned them. Great devices, till I got re-scanned 3 times on the trot.  They (politely and diplomatically) said that it must have been me.  Can't have been!!
