Permit for motor boats

Recommended Posts

I know you need a permit de mer for engines over 5 hp. Is this the same as the International Certificate of Competancy issued in the UK?

Any info would be useful, has anybody taken a French course, is it all theory or practical, and does your English have to be good?

Thanks

Normy

One thing you need to be careful about is where the boat you are using is registered.  ICC is fine for a British registered vessel in e.g. France.  However, it is a British issued document and thus technically if you are in  a French registered vessel you will need French certificates, etc.  (This is the RYA’s guidance a couple of years ago).  I got my ICC (sailing) just in case but was never asked for it – but then I never went beyond harbours.

Do remember that ICCs do expire (last 5 years), the regulations regarding power vessels covered have changed a bit (but I sail so did not read the details on that bit) and RYA don’t (or at least didn’t) like renewing ICCs to non UK residents.
