Will
Well, I know nothing about football.I think England has some very good individual players but they lack the leadership to work as a team. Not just pulling it all together on the field, but a lack of leadership behind the scenes too. Having said that, they are pulling it off when it counts (unlike France) so they might surprise us. Germany seems rather similar, the ability is there but I can't see them going all the way, they just don't seem to operate as a team. Maybe the pressure of being the home side is telling.Brazil has to start as one of the favourites, but from what we have seen so far we have a side of somewhat unprepared has-beens. Italy can never be discounted, maybe they will get to the final but not on the little we have seen so far. So I think my money would be on Argentina - but as Miki says, can they keep it going? Gardian
Germany: always a danger, but far from a great sideFrance: decrepitBrasil: iffyArgentina & Spain: look good, but early daysEngland: hope so, but despite looking v solid at the back, no real penetrationItaly: always the class act & capable of doing it in a 'WC' with (currently} no outstanding team. If we don't, I hope they do. Czechs: dark horses

Rosebud
Thanks Miki. I don't have much knowledge of football, but reading the reports in the press it seems they are quite scathing of Sven playing Gerrard 'too far back'.I fear your previous post is right. From what I've seen so far it doesn't look like victory for England. I too hope that Rooney can take the pressure.Fingers crossed!
Mr Coeur de Lion
I agree that Gerrard needs to roam like he does for Liverpool. He is fast turning into another John Barnes, awesome for his club not so at international level. I would leave Beckham on but take Lampard off as he offers very little if he isn't scoring goals. Lampard is not on form and has scored no goals this tournament despite having many very good chancesUnfortunately Owen looks very unfit, Crouch shouldn't be there at all and what's the point in taking an unproven 17 year old who's never played a game at premiership level let alone international level, and he's not even being played? I bet the forwards like Bent would be gutted after having such a successful season only to be left out. If Sven insisted on taking Walcott he should have taken another striker, perhaps Defoe who has a bit of pace and experience about him because at the moment Crouch is the only real threat up front England have got which is very worrying. But they've managed to scrap 2 wins out of two very ordinary teams, perhaps they'll pick their game up when they play someone good, but with Sven still in charge I doubt England have the balls to go very far. Russethouse
I'd like to see Walcott get a chance now he has been picked. Someone I know saw him at Southampton and said he is very, very fast, but not much else. I thought Lennon (sp) was good. There is something wrong when we rely on one person (Rooney) so much - even I know that and I'm no expert at all. Weedon
I thought it slightly worrying that in the build-up to the tournament all the pundits were saying this was the best chance England had of winning the cup since 66, citing the case of the many world class players in the side. At the time I could only think of, To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive. The use of Crouch to lead a cup winning forward line looks very flawed indeed as playing him confines the side to only playing one way, plus he commits too many fouls in the opponents penalty area by using his arms to gain even more height? Gerard, Lampard and Cole are capable of great performances but only if they have 2 quick strikers in front of them capable of producing something special at any time in the game, sadly Owen looks as if he is struggling with fitness.Look on the bright side as the team usually saves its best performances against the better teams and those penalty shoot-outs in the later stages are fantastic. Our fans win the anthem singing contests and the presentation line-ups are priceless with Crouch standing alongside Owen. After it is all over we have the equally worrying thought that Mr Charisma's right hand man McLaren will be in charge and presumably at the moment he has a lot of input as to who plays and how they play.Cum on Ingerland.weedon PS. Gardian
I popped in to my neighbour this morning on some feeble pretext, but basically to try to wind him up over France's single point so far. It was water off a duck's back - he described them using language that, if repeated, would breach every element of this Forum's code.He reckons that England are a force to be reckoned with: amazingly though, he had never heard of Mr Rooney. Just Katie
I can never remember England playing edge of the seat stuff in the 1st phase. Just get through without injury. Which is what we have done. However Sven worries me with his substitutions. Remember the Brazilian game 4 years ago?

Just Katie
Miki, we have one like that but a welsh rugby son becomes an England supporter. I would never bet Italy by the way, they have so much bad luck. Besides, they dive too much. Like all the teams really, apart from England that is.[:D]
Deimos
Must confess I don’t understand all the posts in this thread. However, I find the levels of commercialism at this World Cup quite surprising. I read today that the a number of Dutch fans have taken to wearing lederhosen (in patriotic orange). Unfortunately these articles of clothing have the name of a brewer (Bavaria) on them and Bavaria are not an official sponsor of the World Cup. Thus, these fans are being made to remove their trousers before entering the stadium and have to watch the game in their underpants !!Commercial sponsorship gone mad ? Is this what sporting events are coming to. http://football.guardian.co.uk/worldcup2006/story/0,,1800885,00.html Ian
Rosebud
I'm confused. Miki
Rosebud,I thought it just saved a Mod from deleting them !France, as happens all too often, let themselves down. Just one goal inthe last 5 World Cup games (finals) tells its own story. Only when theKoreans equalised, did the French put the effort in the way they shouldhave been doing all match. Cassis
I'm intrigued to know what was in Miki's missing posts ...While I ton't hold TOO much store by these things, are we not being perhaps a little optimistic about England's chances given a FIFA world ranking of 10? Or is that all a load of old shoemakers? I sincerely wish England well (though I'm not a big footie fan); from the few matches I've seen no team seems to be shining and there's not much reason for England to be quaking in their boots, regardless of whether Alan Green (Radio 5) et al think they're playing below par themselves. I'm always surprised at the number of passes that go astray and shots hit off-target from footballers of all nationalities - with a lifetime in the game, why can't they kick a ball on target to a given distance? Miki
I'm intrigued to know what was in Miki's missing posts ...
Not as intrigued as I am by all the good info that has been deleted in their hundreds on here !!England are looking slightly better, thanks in part to the ever increasing mediocrity by some of the other sides.I think so far, we might all agree, that the better teams have beenArgentina, Spain (always a faller at the vital hurdle !) Holland andyes, Germany. Italy let themsleves down in their 2nd match and unlessBrazil can put a hidden talent on the pitch, I cannot see them winningthis years World Cup.Alan Green, can't stand the man, whenever Chelsea play he simply wantsthe other side to win. He swoons over Man Utd and shows bias in toomany games involving them. Apart from that, still can't stand him[:D]
Viv
Henry doesn't seem to be able to cope with the big occasion, I think he's good for Arsenal but he is for France what Barnes was for England. Zidane past it ( sorry SB) as is Raul of Spain and Ronaldo for Brazil, a World Cup full of has beens.[:(]Before it started I thought it would be Brazil Germany final, now it could be anybody, but do think the Argentinians look good.I reserve the right to change my mind on a match by match basis.[:P]
