Karen
Can anyone tell me if we need a permit to take a small rowing boat on the river in France? And if so, where do we get one?Karen

Will
The rules are pretty complicated, but in general, for a boat under 5m long, wth an engine power of less than 6hp, no permit or boat licence is needed. You can find the rules at http://www.mer.equipement.gouv.fr/loisirs/06_fluvial/00_regle/. The rules are in the course of being changed, so you may encounter some confusion. Cassis
Will beat me to that. You definitely don't need any kind of permission or certificates for canoeing/kayaking. For pleasure boats over 5m - river barges and the like - you get some instruction from the hire company and they give you a temporary licence, like a provisional driving licence, for the duration of the cruise. Does your rowing boat have oars rated at over 6hp?
