Mr Ice-ni
Or will the Brits revert to type and prefer a plucky loser?John
idun
Always feels like the journalists have put a curse on any chance of glory when they build someone up. Nothing wrong with being a plucky loser though, if there were no other entrants how would we see the best, or the luckiest? My youngest son was a french champion, age and weight in his prefered sport. He never really tried at it, not really, just natural talent and ability. His brother is more like me, untalented and a hard working slogger doing the best he possibly could through hard work and the best he ever came was forth or fifth. What to tell him, it was very hard actually so I am always happy to cheer a plucky loser as long as he or she has tried their best. But that is just me. DerekJ
A truly epic moment for British cycling.... a great team ride where the team gave everything to support Cav. The pressure on Cav both before the race started and then once the final stage came (knowing his team had buried themselves) for him must have been immense. And yet again he delivered. A fantastic ride. And yes, for me you have to be a winner.
Rob Roy
I could hardly bear to watch the end of the race - fantastic effort by Team GB and another brilliant win by the Manx Rocket.[:D] I also said he must be in the running for Sports Personality. Gardian
Taken overall, GB must be the premier cycling nation in the world. It was good to watch this afternoon and a great finish by Cavendish - but it was a team effort, which he (to his credit) is always at pains to acknowledge. idun
How come France isn't? In fact how come France isn't the premier tennis nation too? All my time in France I would see many more people be 'serious' cyclers than I ever have in the UK. And the tennis courts, everywhere and so many people playing all time, including so many kids. sid
Terrific win! Cavendish has grown up; no longer the dummy-spitting sulky guy we saw three or four years ago. He's really matured and has a fantastic finish; it takes guts. He is always at pains now to acknowledge the work done by his team too!British cycling started to improve immediately that the velodrome was opened in Manchester in the early 90's. Specialist high quality training resources make the difference. We have great men's, women's and junior cyclists now... at last!
