Tony F Dordogne
We've recently pruned our vine, taking the advice of one of the people in the village in doing so.From what we could tell, the vine is very mature, probably 10/15 years old according to our French friends. It's probably not been pruned for a couple of years at least. Now it's got water running out of the end of the woody part where it was pruned and where we cut a very long 'branch' off, its leaking badly. We're assuming that it's vine sap and is being caused because it's that time of the year when the sap starts running.Anybody else got experience of this? Tresco
We saw this happen somewhere last year when the weather had been warm and it'd been raining. It was a 20 year old vine, and the sap seemed to be gushing out. The woman who was pruning the vine was completely unconcerned.
Russethouse
//http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles1100/grape_pruning.aspFrom what it says here, when the leaves start coming the 'bleeding' will stop.
chris pp
It's quite normal - IF you prune your vines LATE! and it will stop fairly quickly, don't panic, better to prune in mid February, just as the buds start to change size a little but no harm will have been done.Amazing force isn't it?Chris
Tony F Dordogne
Many thanks for the replies, much appreciated. We're just amazed at the amount of water and force that it actually generates.
