White soil grubs

Hi all

We have started a new organic veg garden from our grass field. Our farmer neibour, ploughed the field for us and we have rotavated it about six times.

Most of the land is now planted, potatoes, runner beans, french beans, beetroot, onions etc. We have planted lots of lettice seeds and some lettice plants that we purchased from the market three weeks ago. yesterday a couple of these plants wilted and when I dug them up there was a small white grub in the root.

We have been to the garden centre today and identified the grub, but they only have non organic treatment for this pest. Can anyone help with an organic cure.

Many thanks

Beris

Can you describe the grubs?  Are they small 'C' shaped - like little creamy maggots, like this:

Wondering if they may be vine weevil grubs - but have not seen them in lettuces before...

I think there is a nematode for Vine Weevil - though they are a bit of

a nightmare to deal with.  Nematodes are natural predators and the

treatment usually last for three or four months.  You have to make

sure you do it at the right time of year though - too hot / cold etc

and the nematodes keel over and die!  Its also quite expensive to

apply - so depending on what has been affected it may be cheaper to put

up with the damage than to treat..  For more info look at the RHS

advice: http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0600/vineweevil.asp.

Best of luck!

Hi Hastobe

Thanks for the info, I think I will just sow more lettice, one for them and two for us, maybe.

By the way, where in staffs do you come from? we came from Wolverhampton, originally in Staffs, now West Mids. We have been living here since Nov last year.

Best wishes

Beris
