montagrier
Hi I live in the dordogne and I wondered if any of my neighbours had managed to grow them out here?monti?
Gail Smith
We live within about 3 miles of you and we grow them reasonably successfully. The ground here is quite stony so they sometimes are funny shapes but taste wonderful. Gail x
Unknown
I live in Deux sevres and we have grown plenty from seed, haven't tasted them yet, but I'm so exicted, they will be ready soon.

hoverfrog
had fantastic parsnips last year, but this year the weather wasn't kind and 2 successive sowings failed to germinate :(Go for it - if you have the seed and the space then you have nothing to lose!I'm going to try again next year :)
chris pp
I always reckon they are best after they have had a bit of frost, try Gladiator, it is, or was, the first F1 hybrid parsnip, and for a change it's a F1 that really is good.Chris
Llwyncelyn
Live in Normandy. This is the first year that I have grown them and from seed. Followed Sarah Raven's book and grown them in plastic guttering and then when strong enough just slipped them into the rows in the garden. Almost 90% germination (bio seed) and had some already but the rest will wait to nearer Xmas and as one contributor says hopefully after some frost. Meg
Good idea about the guttering. I may try it next year. This year was annoying because, as they take an age to germinate, i was getting swamped with weeds and didn't want to pull them up and disturb the seedlings. Also i wasn't exactly sure what i was looking for!Louise
Unknown
My parsnips are wonderfully green at the moment as well Lousie, are we supposed to wait until it dies down?
Tony F Dordogne
Waiting for my first crop also and a chum just brought me another packet of seeds from the UK.
Llwyncelyn
Dear Tony F Dordogne be careful with parsnips as you can see germination is sometimes a problem. Whatever the date on the back of the packet try to get new seed every year. Whilst you can keep other seeds not parsnips. This is not Alan Titchmarsh just me reading Sarah Ravens book and which I recommend for a Xmas present. Have no connection whatsoever with the lady in question!

If you are leaving them in the ground a layer of straw makes them easier to lift if the ground is frozen.Nice Avatar..................... copy cat!
