Mayennaise
Can anyone tell me what this is pse:It started of life as a black root - a bit like a shrivelled carrot! PeterG
I would have a guess and say it is a Nicotina, "flowering tobacco". I am sure someone else will either confirm or dispute this answer.
Mayennaise
That was my first thought when the flowers appeared but there is no perfume and it seems to be much bushier that your standard tobaco plant.!!
Pierre ZFP
The leaves are too small for a nicotiana as well.Dunno what it is but it looks good!
Mayennaise
Got the answer - apparently it is a Mirabilis Jalapa, otherwise known as the 4 o'clock plant!! PS took the pic this morning at 10 and now, at 4 o'clock all the flowers are curled up!!
Tony F Dordogne
We have it in our garden, plus a pink version of it. And it's in flower all day, was still open last evening at 9.
Cottage Garden
I used to sell this plant. That is definitely a Mirabilis jalapa, as someone said sometimes called 4 o'clock plant or Marvel of Peru. It has a lovely scent and comes in yellow, pink, white and various blotchy versions of those colours. The black root is a tuber and overwinters like that. It is not reliably hardy but if planted deep enough will survive the winter or the seed may germinate the next year.
MaryM
I thought this was a Belle De JourI've got Belle de Nuit...which does the opposite - flowers at night.
