Rtony
Hello All,Our French house has a separate garden about 100 metres away from the house and used to be looked after by a neighbour.Unfortunately our neighbour has had health problems and in the year since we were last there has not been able to do any work.Consequently the garden (100 metres long by 10 metres wide) is now overgrown with weeds and at least half of it brambles. Are there any easy ways to get rid of the brambles, ie spray them with something that kills them and they degrade into the ground? (I wish).Thanks.
woolybanana
FLAMETHROWER GETS RID OF THE HATE THEN POISON. But remember to pick the fruit first.
Suninfrance
Our tractor has a grass cutter, and OH just backed it into the brambles and it did a good job of mulching them down. Now we just frequently cut the area and eventually the brambles will die. However, the flamethrower idea is a good one, but make sure your local Mairie doesn't have a ban on fires, etc
chrisb
Not so good if you haven't got a tractor (envy envy) - but yes - the only way is to chop right back and just keep doing it as they re-emerge. It will work eventually.Meanwhile bramble jelly is a lovely treat on crumpets.
zeb
Use a systematic desherbant (weedkiller). The label on the back will give dosages for the kinds of weeds you want to kill. Just make sure that it gives the dosage required to kill ronces (brambles) - I'm using a cheapo bottle from Casino (Desherbant Polyvent, around 12 euros) at the moment and it's excellent! Kills all weeds and brambles, just spray on a dry, windless day (on the leaves) when it's not too hot, then spray again in about 6 weeks time, et voila! your brambles should be dead. Clear up and burn.
Pierre ZFP
Get a pig! one or two of those will clear everything in a few weeks then you can have roast pork [:'(]
Russethouse
Cut back ot burn now and be ready with a systemic weed killer next spring when the new shoots come through. Gypsopholate is the ingredient to look for..........spray or paint as described above.
zeb
I'd definitely try to kill them now RH as everything is still growing this year!
Russethouse
Perhaps rather than next spring I should have put 'everytime you see the little blighters !'[:)]
Patf
A word of warning about dealing with brambles - they are really vicious things and you need to cover up if handling them. I had a nasty accident with one while in uk- we were out for a walk and a bramble was hanging over the path so I pushed it aside with my umbrella and it flew back and scratched me on the face. What a mess I was, blood pouring out etc. So take care!
Rtony
Thanks for all the advice and warnings. We normally only get to France 2 or 3 times a year for 2 or 3 weeks at a time so we may be a bit restricted as far as poisoning is concerned. I like the idea of a flame gun though. Would it be practical to use one on 500 square metres? Tony

When you cut them down they jump at you usually finding some skin to attach themselves to.[:D]
